Understand the scope
Clarify the project phase, requested service, applicable documents, responsibilities and expected deliverables.
Dennis Dekker is an independent superyacht coating consultant with more than 15 years of experience in the yacht and marine coatings industry. His work combines practical inspection experience, technical understanding and clear reporting across newbuild, refit, survey and warranty assignments.
Dennis supports shipyards, yacht managers, captains and owner teams with independent coating consultancy throughout the project lifecycle. Assignments range from coating specifications, inspection plans and surface-preparation checks to fairness assessment, topcoat acceptance, condition surveys and warranty investigations.
His approach is deliberately straightforward: establish the agreed requirements, assess the actual condition, document the findings clearly and provide practical recommendations. The objective is not to represent one project party by default, but to provide a technically substantiated and transparent view of the coating work.
Experience across construction, refit and warranty work allows Dennis to recognise coating risks early, distinguish cosmetic concerns from technical failures and communicate findings in a way that supports timely decisions.
“A useful inspection should not only identify what is wrong. It should make clear what was observed, why it matters and what the practical next step should be.”
Clarify the project phase, requested service, applicable documents, responsibilities and expected deliverables.
Assess preparation, application, appearance or reported defects against the agreed requirements and actual conditions.
Record observations, measurements, photographs, conclusions and open points in concise technical reporting.
Translate the findings into workable next steps that support quality, planning and informed decision-making.
Recent work includes technical support on major newbuild and refit programmes, coating condition surveys, final cosmetic acceptance inspections and warranty investigations. Project examples are intentionally presented without identifying confidential clients or vessels.
Inspection support from steel preparation and primer stages through filler, topcoat and final cosmetic acceptance.
Condition assessment, scope review, execution support, quality control and final completion inspections.
Independent assessment of reported defects, extent, likely contributing factors and appropriate next steps.
Structured review of existing coating condition to support tendering, budgeting and contractor comparison.
Assessment of gloss, texture, fairness, cleanliness and local finish imperfections against agreed criteria.
Preparation and review of coating specifications, hold points, quality requirements and acceptance criteria.
Specific vessel names, client details and confidential project information are discussed only where appropriate.
Dekker Coating Consultancy can be engaged for a clearly defined technical scope by a shipyard, yacht manager, captain, owner team or another project stakeholder. The appointment does not change the basis of the assessment: the work remains objective, technically substantiated and transparently reported.
For newbuild, refit, survey, specification or warranty support, provide the project location, current phase and requested scope for an initial review.
